There are four things you have to do if you want to become famous without becoming a serial killer, A-list movie star, or politician. Follow all four steps and fame is more or less inevitable.

  1. Don’t be boring.

With ever more content online, you need to differentiate. If your cause is not easily identifiable and unique, no one will care. Chris Crocker became famous because he was the only person in America (possibly in the world?) who felt compelled to defend Britney Spears after her disastrous on-air MTV meltdown performance. His teary-eyed screed made him a household name. Paris Hilton became famous from a lurid sex tape — she already had the last name, and the video took her viral. Donald Trump remains famous because he isn’t afraid to speak his mind — he says the things many of us “wish” we could say in public but don’t. 

You can also take the help of Instagram DM and get in touch with your more and more people. This way you can improve the reach of your content and get more and more followers for your online campaign. 

  1. Rally others to your cause.

Establish an online newsletter — all of your friends, co-workers, family, and distant acquaintances should be on this list. Notify them when you have something worth buzzing about (an outrageous new YouTube video, for example). Also, submit aggressively — post a link on your Facebook page, on MySpace, and on the major social bookmarking services (Digg.com, Reddit.com, Del.icio.us, Propeller.com). Also, sign up for a StumbleUpon account and begin using that service. I have received as many as 500,000 hits to a single page after posting funny and unique content to StumbleUpon.

  1. Get the mainstream media on board.

Once you receive a degree of online notoriety, you need to make the leap to mainstream media. Send a concise press release through one of the major release wires — emphasize your online popularity (if your YouTube video has received 800,000 views, this should be the first thing you mention in your release. The second thing you should mention should be that you’ve accomplished this with a budget of $0.)

  1. Don’t overstay your welcome.

Your viral video, outrageous web site, or stunning audio clip will make its way around the world and get you on a few (or possibly many) television and radio shows. Don’t become that guy known for doing one outrageous thing (i.e. The Star Wars kid). Instead, evolve into a consistent brand — post new content on a regular basis. Build fans using a YouTube channel. Grow that online newsletter with an obsessive zeal — it will become your most valuable marketing tool. It is important not to ride a publicity wave past its natural peak. When your video dies down, create something new. You’ll already have a leg up on the competition because people will remember you from last time. Over time, they will trust your content — and you. You’ll become a personality.
